About the Event
Every year, International Child Advancement organizes a summer back to school event to benefit refugee and immigrant children in Buffalo, NY. These children tend to experience Cultural Identity Conflict - the struggle to reconcile American culture with the expectations of their parents/culture, which stem from a country they may or may not feel a connection to. This conflict often "travels" with them to college and into their careers making it difficult to find a sense of inclusion and belonging.
Identity Conflict can cause welcome and unwelcome internal changes to one’s authentic self. Panelists will share stories regarding their personal experiences with Identity Conflict. Conflicts they had to face while navigating more than one culture in their homes/upbringing, through family, friends, environment and self-identifying virtues.
During the discussion, we will explore how to navigate identity conflict at home, school and in the workplace in order to rise above that conflict so that there is peace and acceptance.
